File destruction
It is a surprising news, but when you normally delete a file, that file isn't really erased. Your computer simply marks that a space occupied by this file is 'unused'. Its very easy to recover data from these places. There are plenty of good programs available for recovering deleted files. There are also other places and processes which leave invisible traces of information from programs and files on the disk (things like swap file, temporary files or 'rewriting' the files). That's why it is very important to wipe all this information out using one of the tools below. See also some references to the documentation:
Eraser
Eraser - Eraser is an advanced security tool, which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Meta data destruction
